Remember crazy disco house era ?
French duet Auger/Berroyer threw this EP with a lot of fun check out "Atom Funk". Those guys sure had great records to pick in back in the days when sampling wasn't such a problem, or maybe just a phase in music evolution.

Yeah what a record "Tango Hustle" by the Kay-Gees, funk (clavinet my friends) with a pinch of disco (check out the piano part) a good basis for a house track...

An incredible track from prolific James Brown band the JB's : "The Grunt"

Maceo's sax is yellin' all his power, soul power !!!

Many Hip Hop Mc's have rhymed verses on this track such as Jungle Brothers, Ultramagnetic MCs, Pete Rock, Pharcyde, Eric B. and Rakim, 2 Live Crew or Wu-Tang Clan.
But the one group who really digested this incredible monster track is Public Enemy in an fantastic and historic album "It Takes A Nation Of Million To Hold Us Back"

You know Dorothy Ashby ? If you do, this sleeve may looks familiar...this is the home of the massive and hypnotic "Soul Vibrations". But there's also a version of "Little sunflower". She pinched her Harp several times with Freddie Hubbard.

Freddie Hubbard who gathered a nice casting on this album such as Chick Corea, Stanley Clarke...for this version of "Little Sunflower" sung by young Al Jarreau.

The chords of Hubbard's version are really well put together by Pepe Bradock in this major hit "Deep Burnt"

The Daft Punk have always been sampling in their tracks, they were very close to the Chicago scene (DJ Sneak and Paul Johnson generation, just listen to teachers...) so here's "Indo Silver Club" from their 1st album Homework released in 1996.

R.I.P Mel Cheren, one of the main Disco producers back in the days with West End, he also founded the Paradise Garage home of Larry Levan, temple of Disco.
Big hit "Hot Shot" by Karen Young (1978) inspired Daft Punk's creation for our pleasure.

The first one is "Amerika" a very sweet and mellow track very engaged in black "stand for". The spine of the track is based upon Gil Scott Heron Poetry as usual very political. If you listen carefully this text still smells fresh today, you change the names and situation and there you are...

Here's "Bicentennial Blues" from Gil Scott Heron just a voice easy to edit !!!

And for the musical standpoint listen closely to the intro of "Turn This Mutha Out" from Idris Muhammad...

For those who always wondered who was that voice on Fingers Inc classic "Can You Feel It" released in 1988 on Jack Trax. Thanks for this one Funky Mr Larry Heard !

It's just "Can you feel it" from the Jackson's in a 1981 live...in fact it's the opening of the concert. There's quite a motivation from the brothers when you pay attention to the furious tempo !!!

I was beguining another face to face but it was quite obvious, so listening to the original another idea came up...

Dig this :

Let's get down on the 90's dancefloors with Global Communication's big hit EP The way/The deep (1996). Man "The way" is quite a major track, one of those we will be listened to in many years without the feeling of the years passed...this part of eternity good things hold inside.

I chose the "The Way (secret ingredients)" mix because of the variety of the construction, the fatness of subs and most of all the strenght of the groove.

I dedicate this to Ark who plays it endlessly !!!

Where does this sweet voice come from ? Philly !!!

Before being precisely edited in "The way" it's been recorded for Dexter Wansel's album "Time is sleeping away" (1979), it's Terri Wells for "The sweetest pain".

And what's funny is when you get to listen the Rhodes intro...

In 1995 parisian DJ Cam released "Mad Blunted Jazz" with one of his anthems "Dieu reconnaitra les siens". The basic loop of the track is this Rhodes break from Dexter Wansel "The Sweetest Pain"...Funny huh ?

Bouncing from track to track you'll hear a little bit further (in Cam's "Dieu reconnaitra les siens") a Quincy Jones break very famous also sampled a lot by Nightmares on Wax : "Summer in the city". Sweet chords arrangements aren't they ?

Air is very famous for their using of analog synths in their compositions since their very beguinning. This little opus made a special effect when it came out in 1997 (Source).

Gil Scott Heron... here he is with "We almost lost Detroit" and I guess the french duet was well inspired by this etheral intro. They just changed slightly the tone.

Micronauts Mr Monnier may have been geniously influenced by Mr Leon Ware.

So I've discovered this incredible Leon Ware album on 4 Brothers Beats blog (big props to them) and I was surprised when I listened to "Tamed to be wild" First, because this bass is far ahead of its time for a 1972 track and also because this bass sounded familiar...

All at a sudden it came back : it sounds like "High Rye" of the Micronauts...but the bass never plays alone, there's always drums and synths on Leon Ware's track !!!

So check it out !

This very first video to feel Sample's style, king of the Rhodes, he deals with harmonics for real.
Surely The Crusaders do provide the groove to make this solo possible...Live from L.A

And extracted from the same concert a longer solo where he's turning it inside out, searching all the ways to play the grid without playing it twice the same way.

Like many jazz, jazz funk, funk or disco artists, Sample has been sampled in hip hop but the sample I chose is a bit different.
It's taken from a french track called "Disco Cubizm" by I:Cube remixed by the Daft Punk at their beguinning, it went out in 1996 on Versatile.
They took a few parts of the Street Life Rhodes solo to build a nice french house hit.
Here are the two tracks in full version and a little edit to focus on the samples.

It's funny to listen to an artist retrospectively in a moment of his career.
If you pay attention to what a musician says with his instrument it's sounds like a voice with it's own expressions.
Coltrane, Davis, Monk, Peterson, Hendrix...each of everyone is recognizable !

Let's illustrate :

This is a classic hit "Breezin'" written by Bobby Womack.
This track was played by Gabor Szabo with Bobby Womack on his album "High Contrast". We'll take this track as the reference to what is told below...

And here's a live version displayed by George Benson in association with Carlos Santana.

And now listen to those 2 Santana's tracks, one is "Song Of The Wind" played live (Paris 1977).

B3 is unique in its sound and in the way you play it, the percussion, the harmonics !

Man ! Just look at that guy playing, the sound is crafty but the vibe's alive.

I was looking for a video of this track of Santana called "Paris Final" I've heard on the Best Of "Viva Santana" long time ago, and I found this very lookalike track. Listen to the way the organist holds the crowd, such a preacher isn't he ? This was recorded Live in Paris 1983 the organist is Chester Thompson and the singer is Greg Walker.

I can't resist to add this one to tell that organ also takes part in house music, the bass chords are so deep !!!

Sydney a du y puiser un peu d'inspiration pour H.I.P H.O.P...
Cette institution de la musique black a fait passer tout plein de groupe funk et disco, hip hop, rythm & blues et electro à la télé. Merci Don Cornelius!!!
C'est après des débuts difficiles à la radio en 1967 à Chicago qu'il a décidé de monter un pilote pour la télé à ses frais.
En 1970 une chaine de Chicago, WCIU-TV a commençé à diffuser Soul Train une fois par jour en semaine.
Après un début prometteur Don Cornelius s'est envolé vers la Californie en 1971 où Soul Train est rapidement devenu un show national.
The Isley Bros, James Brown, Aretha Franklin, the Jackson 5, Stevie Wonder, BT express, TSOP, the Ojay's...enfin tout ce qui a compté dans la black music depuis est passé par le micro de Don Cornelius.
En 1987 il a créé les Soul Train Music Awards.
Sa société existe toujours aujourd'hui et propose des DVD (http://www.soultrain.com) retraçant cette époque divine où Patte d'ef et coupe afro groovaient sur la Soul Train Lane.

Printemps 2004 je suis arrivé un peu par hasard à la fondation Vasarely pour le festival Biomix/Territoires Electroniques. Cette année l'invité principal était le label Warp avec comme guests Jamie Lidell, Isolée, Pierre Bastien, Abstrakt Keal Agram, Luke Vibert, Prefuse 73...mais surtout quelle ne fut pas ma surprise de voir à l'affiche Rythm & Sound, le duo resté secret durant toutes les années 90 entre Detroit et Berlin, Basic Channel, Maurizio !!! Les organisateurs étaient motivés ils sont allés les chercher en voiture à Barcelone pour qu'ils jouent à Aix. Résultat 3 heures de selection Reggae Roots remixées Dub avec la voix chaude de Paul St Hilaire AKA Tikiman.
Rythm & sound Fo' fine selection....

Voici un film retraçant le festival Nuziq 2006 à Nice. Vous y trouverez des interviews de Wax Tailor et The Herbaliser. Le tout est filmé à trois caméras, merci à Stéphane Heinz et Nicolas Fogliarini.
